Law school, day one
She wavers on the lip
of the rotunda strident
with student-jabber.
Heads in a denim sea â
sharp mouths, metal eyes.
Clutching her bones
she steps down.
ii
The firm
Elevator doors glide open
like theatre curtains.
She enters a marbled foyer
that sweeps to glass walls framing
the porous sky.
A lacquered receptionist
adorns mahogany,
purrs,
and with crimson nail
taps the button, expels
a poised assistant,
the guide within.

The interview
She seals the tall
oak door behind her
and he points to chairs
(navy plush) angled
towards the desk
(tinted glass, chrome
knotted loops).
Post-modern oils hang
on silk-sheathed walls,
lucite trophies (spoils
of corporate mergers)
litter credenza shelves.
He settles.
At his feet the city
scampers about its day.
